Pets and Celebrity Owners

Pet Tales

Harley is a cute-as-a-button, six year old Yorkshire terrier. Harley, with his Mr. and Mrs., lives in Hamilton in an apartment building that happens to be located right beside a lot frequently used in movie making. With trailers housing actors, movie personnel and film crews on site, it can sometimes be quite a busy, interesting location. But Harley, even at such times, still pretty much just considers it his place to go for a walk, several times every day.

One day, a few years ago, Harley and his Mr. were on such a walk, with movie cameras rolling on the lot beside them, when out of one of the trailers rushed an actress, who made straight for Harley. As she cuddled him in her arms, she explained she was missing her own pets back in Hollywood so much that she just had to say hello to Harley. Well, Harley may have forgotten that particular walk by now, but his Mr. sure remembers the day. Thanks to Harley, he got to meet and chat with Meg Ryan.

Interesting isn't it, that most people enjoy learning about the pets chosen by famous people. I thought it would be fun to connect some famous people with the pets they own.. If there is someone named that you particularly admire, knowing their choice in a pet may help when next choosing one for yourself.

The Chihuahua probably has roots in South America and is said to have been sacred to the Aztecs. Also, this breed has a face that is described as saucy. Do you think either of these breed facts might have anything to do with its current popularity as a celebrity pet?  Paula Abdul has Yoda, Hilary Duff owns Chiquita, Paris Hilton has Bambi and Britney Spears calls her Chihuahua, Bit Bit. However, there are some other breeds that have homes with the famous. Jessica Simpson has a Malti-poo (a Maltese, poodle mix) named Daisy and Ashley Judd has Buttermilk, a Cock-a-Poo.

The size of the dog seems to change if we switch our attention to male celebs. Adam Sandler has an English Bulldog named Meatball, Mel Gibson, being true to his country of origin, owns Patch, an Australian Shepherd, Michael J. Fox has Bosco, a Dalmatian and Jim Carey shares his home with George, a Great Dane.

Professional athletes, just like everyone else, enjoy coming home after a tough day at practice or appreciates some stress reduction on game day, with the help of a pet. Two superstars in the hockey world seem to have quite a different preference in dogs. Wayne Gretzky has Clyde, a dachshund and Mario Lemieux has Abby, a Collie mix and Ben, a Newfoundland. Baseball players Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGwire seem to go for big numbers in the choice of a pet. Griffey Jr. has Akeiba, a Rottweiler and McGwire owns Mac, a Great Dane.

Jack Nicklaus, the Golden Bear of golf fame owns a Golden Retriever, called Cali. Greg Norman has Foster, a Labrador retriever. John Elway, professional football player, chose Kimo, an Alaskan Malamute for his pet. That choice would seem quite in keeping with the image a football player would like to project. However, you have to admire Brett Favre, quarterback for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League. He must be very secure in his masculinity. His pet is Jazzmin, a Yorkshire terrier.

Now that is quite a wide range of dogs who share their lives with famous people, isn't it?
Once again it just goes to prove that dogs are very adaptable creatures. They can live and thrive in very diverse lifestyles. Also, here's a reassuring note to remember. I know that your very own dog will be just as devoted to you, as it would be to a more famous, celebrity master.
