SafePet Program

Bay Cities Animal Hospital is an active participant in the OVMA SafePet program, which is dedicated to assisting women in leaving abusive partners by providing temporary housing and care for their pets.

In a 1998 OSPCA survey it was found that 48% of surveyed Ontario women who had left their abusive partner said that their pets delayed their decision to leave an abusive partner.  61% of surveyed Ontario women who had left their abusive partner stated that their partners had brutalized or killed a pet.

Through the SafePet program, women can make the final decison to leave an abusive partner and know that they have a safe place to take their pets.  Participating veterinary clinics provide temporary housing and care for these pets for two weeks so that the woman at risk of abuse can find longer-term arrangements for their pets.
